1) Game of Thrones: So confession. Have not read the books. Will probably never read the books (seriously, props to those who have.....those bad boys look like door stoppers to me. In short, I cannot read fast enough to invest in them, sorry), but BIG SERIOUS FANTASY HBO series? Am there. Am so there.
So when you go and cast Boromir (Sean Bean) and Elizabeth Bennett (Jennifer Ehle), AND Son-of-Mine from Doctor Who (Harry Lloyd)? I want to see this SO BADLY NOW.
2) Which reminds me to pick up the DVD box set of The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency whenever it comes out. Darn you cable company for dropping HBO off the basic service.
3) So Naruto...
So, for whatever storytelling technique reasons that Kishimoto has, Sai decided he should go to Sakura and tell her that Naruto is a) in love with her, b) still keeping that promise to bring Sasuke back to her, and c) suffering because of b and indirectly because of Sakura.
Not only does this have an air of NICE GUY (TM) - "How can you NOT love Naruto back after he's done so much for you!", but the idea that Naruto is bringing Sasuke back solely for Sakura's sake pretty much invalidates everything that makes the manga work. I mean, we all know the REAL pairing is Naruto-Sasuke, right?
Also, since when does Sakura not know that Naruto is in love with her? She's written as if this is news to her.
And! Look, I love Naruto/Hinata but given canon's tendency to burn me at every turn, do not expect much from it. HOWEVER! I think that it's stupid storytelling to not have Naruto at least say, 'thanks, but no thanks' to Hinata. SHE ONLY FREAKING SAVED YOUR LIFE.
I am not theoretically adverse to stirring up the fanbase, but some INTELLIGENCE in doing so would be appreciated.
And if Sakura suddenly is in love with Naruto after being told by Sai, I will barf. That's a promise of a lifetime.

Date: 2009-08-05 05:43 am (UTC)I do agree that Naruto's not just doing this for Sakura, though. I mean, it's clear from stuff that's happening right now that Naruto is doing it because Sasuke is his friend.

Date: 2009-08-05 07:18 am (UTC)Regarding GRRM, I would never encourage someone to read a series of potential murder weapons when they found the length offputting, but they tend to be fast paced enough to be less daunting when you actually read them, should you reconsider.

Date: 2009-08-06 01:01 am (UTC)Everything I've read about Game of Thrones suggests that reading the series is time well spent. But I am a little concerned about the length, the fact that the series is not yet finished and finally, since I read spoilers, about terrible things happening to good people in an unrelenting manner. I think for my fiction pleasures I do need people to cheer for and for them to occasionally succeed, and I worry that my heart will be crushed by what happens to the characters.
(P.S. From what I read of spoilers, I think I would like Cat too. I'm not sure why people don't? Actually all the females sound interesting, although I suspect my younger self would have liked ladylike Sansa and tomboy Arya best).

Date: 2009-08-06 02:28 am (UTC)Cat is...difficult. Because many objections to her seem to have to do with her fulfilling a traditional female role (that is, she's defined primarily as a mother and a wife) but not obeying any of the RULES of it. Yet, the same people love the evil incestuous adulterous manipulative treasonous queen. Which isn't to say that I don't love her too...
I don't think age is a determiner when it comes to loving Arya and Sansa!
